The photographs in the Horizons series are suggestive of something beyond the record presented. The images of the buildings in São Paulo, Tokyo and Buenos Aires explore the limits of two-dimensionality, and articulate a radically different perspective on a commonplace visual scenario. In expressing this fresh point of view, Bruno Cals has invoked contrasting themes of possibility versus impossibility, presence versus emptiness, and search versus satisfaction.

They are some quite stunning examples of what can be achieved when applying an architectural design to a more traditional graphic design implementation.

Each of the posters is based on a well known and distinctive building in a particular city. The distinctive element of that building are then turned into a pattern of sorts that forms the basis for the poster. For example - the asymmetrical polygons that make up the Water Cube National Aquatic Center from the Beijing Olympics are presented as the background graphic in blue and grey on a particular poster.

Each poster is then overlaid with three letters representative of the city the building is located in.

The posters are stunning to look at, even with no knowledge of the relevance of the shapes - but a bit of extra knowledge and understanding adds hugely to their appeal. The colours are toned back slightly so as not to be too gaudy, but are bright enough to kick off the page and draw just enough attention to themselves.

Go check them out.

Sydney Architecture Festival is coming upon us quickly. Interestingly it is on at the exact same time as Australian Web Week -- October 2nd to 9th. Its going to a full, but thoroughly interesting and enjoyable week.

I'm particularly look forward to some of the exhibitions they are going to be running, in at Customs House at Circular Quay.

Testing Reality - The Architect and the Model is an exhibition centred around the Marcus Seidler House (designed by famous Australian architect Harry Seidler). A series of architectural models of the house have been commissioned specifically for the exhibition. As a whole, the exhibition is going to be examining the role and place of architectural models in the modern architecture practice.

Ulterior Motives is an exhibition of work from the UTS Master of Architecture program. The works are examining the potential of the Ultimo precinct and how it could be transformed into a vibrant and exciting area.

Max Dupain @ Circular Quay sounds like it could be a very interesting exhibition. There isn't too much information about this particular exhibition, but it sounds as though it will be targeted at younger festival goers. It sounds like a small exhibit of Dupain's photographs - with the aim of encouraging others to embark on their own mission to photograph the area.

There's bound to be lots going on throughout the whole week, so get out there and see some of it.

Thomas Doyle creates works that are part model, part art, part artifact and wholly surreal. Working at a scale of 1:43 or smaller, Doyle takes you to small fragments of a world of half memories and recollections.

His various works seem to be different views of suburbia, albeit one where things are not quite right. Landscapes skew and disappear, houses sink into the ground, the dirt beneath them becomes non-existent. Loyd states...

"In much the way the mind recalls events through the fog of time, the works distort reality through a warped and dreamlike lens."

The works are clearly pieces of art, but there is a high level of craftsmanship that has gone into the making. especially when it comes to the houses and buildings within the pieces, they have a fantastic feel of realism - aged and wearing as well they should. The feel like middle-America suburbia - a quiet leafy green suburb where things are not quite right. I keep getting visions of "To Kill a Mockingbird".

The question that bears asking is whether these works speak to the world and discipline of architecture. They speak of the relationship between person and property, person and structure, but perhaps from a different viewpoint than we might normally see.

Regardless of what you think, they are well worth checking out.
