Kim Høltermand

Kim Høltermand is a architecture photographer based in Denmark. I stumbled across some of his work yesterday and was utterly astounded. His photos have a beautiful starkness to them, presenting the buildings almost devoid of surroundings, except perhaps a highly contrasting sky.
The way the buildings are shot presents their shape and form as the major feature. Høltermand finds angles that at times reduce the architecture to purely abstract forms. Angles and curves, tone and shade all let the architect's vision shine through. Features of the building are noticeable, but interpreted in a way that is almost other-worldly.
Høltermand seems to be happy to let the building speak, as much as he wants to imprint his own artistic vision. The images are processed in a way that cuts back the colour saturation which helps to focus attention on the forms themselves.
From a design perspective, the composition of the images is quite interesting. Many of the images look almost as though they are something that may have been used in a modernist poster from the 50s. White space is used to great effect, in some instances there is even more space than building in the images.
I would imagine that Høltermand is the sort of photographer that architects would love to work with. He does a fantastic job of presenting structures in new and interesting ways, but without over-shadowing the buildings themselves. I highly recommend you take a look through his portfolio, it is thoroughly astounding.
